Cuchulainn Cycling Club Athlete Bryan McCrystal won the 100mile time trial Championships held in Woodgreen, Co. Antrim on Sunday last. Not only did McCrystal win the event outright, he also set a new national record for the distance, knocking a narrow 1 second off the previous record set by Munster cycling legend Rory Whyley. Considering this was his first attempt at an event of this distance his is sure to reduce the record even further in the future. His time of 3hrs 51mins means an average speed of over 25miles per hour for a full 100miles.
This result is another one in what as been an outstanding season for McCrystal as both a road cyclist and triathlete. Taking a national gold medal even betters his impressive feet of winning the Newry 3 Day back in June.
At this stage all the money has been taken in from the club's recent Mizen to Malin Head cycle and the total is in excess of €18,000. Of this amount an incredible €2,500 was raised by Jason Boyle, not content with just training for the event, Jason raised almost €4 for every km he cycled. Oliver Murphy and Liam Flynn also raised impressive amounts, alongside Shelir Muldoon and Kevin Hamill who organised a fund raising night in Courtneys bar.
The next event on the club's calendar is the annual overnight tri, which takes place on October 16th.
