There has been a hive of activity around Dundalk's Cuchulainn Cycling Club over the recent summer weeks. At the beginning of August, Newcastle, Co. Limerick hosted the Masters National Championship and in the time trial event the club collected a silver by Jimmy Flynn in the M60 category and a bronze by Ciara Kinch in the masters womens.
The following weekend Aidan Cunningham claimed a very impressive second place in the M50 road race in Antrim. In a very hilly race Cunningham got away almost from the start and eventually came second in the sprint for the line.
The club hosted the annual Louth & Leinster Hill Climb Championships on Jenkinstown Hill, where the club claimed provincial tites in the U14 and 16 girls by Grace O`Rourke and Rhiannon Dolan respectively. The outright title went to European based rider Aaron Wade, while Ciara Kinch and Tomas McCabe won the Louth Championships.
In between all the racing the club hosted the Women's Lap of Louth, returning after a 2 year Covid enforced absence. Jacquiline Healy and her team put on a tremendous event which saw almost 300 women tackle either an 88 or 55km route around the county. The weather on the day really helped those enjoy a great event, which is sure to become a regular fixture on the calendar.
The All Ireland Underage Championships were held towards the end of the month in Armagh. In the Under 11 girls Eire McCrystal of Bellurgan Wheelers won 3 medals with a gold in the road race and criterium alongside a silver in the time trial. In the under 15 girls Rhiannon Dolan was desperately unlucky to come away empty handed, finishing in 4th position in all 3 events, road race, time trial and criterium. In the under 14 girls the Cuchulainn team of Grace O`Rourke, Holly McCaffrey and Ffion Dolan, all performed well but unfortunately did not collect any medals.
In the under 13 boys Rian McCrystal, Bellurgan Wheelers, claimed a clean sweep of the podiums winning the time trial, road race and criterium. Cushullain's male cyclists Michael O`Rourke, Calum McCafrey and Callum Goss performed admirably in the various older categories, buut again came away without medals.
Finally the club organised a ride in aid of member Dickie Newell, whom suffered life changing injuries following an accident while out cycling. Over 250 cyclists took part and special thanks goes to the Red Cross, The Lisdoo Bar & Restaurant, The Four Seasons Hotel Carlingford, DKIT Sport, The Fairways Hotel, SuperValu and McCann packaging for supporting the event and helping to raise vital money for the support fund. Special thanks also to An Garda Siochana who provided an escort on the day of the cycle.
