Round 15 of the Bike Station League

Round fifteen of the Bike Station League on Thursday night was a repeat of the 40km two-lap Ravensdale circuit from earlier in the season. It was lashing rain from the heavens at the sign-on and everyone was soaked to the skin even before the start line. The water was running down the road in rivers but at least it was warm rain!
League debutante Rosena Lynch got a mention in the paper as she was sitting in fourth place overall in the table, and only five points behind the leader! Will there be a female winner in the league?
To add to the excitement, there has been a final group reshuffle with last minute promotions leaving a few birds with ruffled feathers! However, one man's (or woman's) misfortune is another man's gain as they say, leaving new opportunities for some, and all to play for in the last three rounds.
There were four Cuchulainn ladies battling the elements, Rosemary Gibson and Rosena Lynch back in group two, Mary Laverty in group three and Celine McPhillips in group four. Mairead Holden was marshalling and there was a splendid contingent of Cuchulainn ladies complete with cowbell out on the course giving everyone great encouragement!
As usual, from the off, there was a headlong rush down the hill to Major's Hollow where the riders successfully navigated a large oil slick or two. More frantic pedalling to get back on before the Ballymac roundabout and the mad charge along the Aghaboy's straight. The spray from the road at times was like being hosed in the face with tepid, dirty water in your eyes and mouth, running down your legs and dripping out of your shoes.
Group one managed to stay away from groups two and three for the overall win and the big points. Group three caught group two in Bellurgan on lap two and the groups stayed together for a while until the strong pace up the climb from Fitzpatrick's and Crilly's saw the groups separate again. The rain lessened slightly on the second lap and everyone was glad to get home safely. Well done all who took part and marshalled in horrid conditions!
