Spring is finally here and with it the irresistible urge to get out on the bike. Camlough CC's Spring 60 marks the official end of the long winter hibernation period. Any lingering cobwebs have well and truly been blown off the bike at this stage. The weather was overcast throughout but it was such a lovely warm day- perfect conditions.
Team Cuchulainn Women were out in force today- we had 8 ladies out- the most I have seen at a local sportive in a while. Welcome back Michelle... and Annette Dolan- great seeing you again. Pat's Ladies were also represented by Aine Meehan and Roisin Richardson. Paula Campbell took part in her second ever sportive, having done the Newry Wheelers Sportive last weekend.
Spring 60 had a huge turnout, it was great seeing so many new clubs at it. We took off at a good pace, and all stuck together. The pace naturally upped itself. It's great when you are naturally being pulled along. The Longfield Road (8 miles) doesn't seem so long when there is so much chat. I reckon a lot of PB's were reached today. Strava is King on sportives as well! It could almost have been the Tour de France.
Our 1/2way mark was Fitzpatricks where we had hot soup and sambos. It was a sea of colour. Sportives are such a great way of meeting up for the craic. You get to chat with people you don't normally see.
Refreshed, we all set off as a group over through Ravensdale, where the pace settled a bit. We knew there would be a lot of rolling roly poly bits. On over to Carrickdale and over to Camlough direction. The road snaked through the countryside. A few drags followed by fast downhills.
The 60km was over in no time we were greeted with curry and a medal at the end. This was a perfect end to a perfect day. Coffee and tea at the start, great marshalling and hot food at the 1/2 way mark and finish. It was like a real social event. Cuchulainn CC were well represented. Roll on Spring 60 2017. Thank You to Camlough CC for putting on such a great event.
Next up: Slieve Gullion Wheelers Tour of Carlingford - Sun 3rd April and Carrickmacross North East Coastal Cycle on Sunday April 10th.
