Dundalk's Eve McCrystal took her first open road race win of the season in Dunboyne last weekend. The race was a part of the National Women's League & saw the riders tackle a hilly 20km lap 3 times. Eve let the race settle naturally on the first lap and used the second lap to make her race winning move. On the long hill she attacked, going clear with former National Road Race Champion Geraldine Gill and Ciara Kinch. The 3 rode together to build up a solid lead on the main bunch, which despite the wind had grown to 90secs by the end of the 60kms.
In the sprint for the finish Eve knew Gill would be the lady to watch & held her wheel coming towards the line. With 200ms to go Eve kicked & overtook Gill for her maiden win. This result bodes well for the Gardaí, ahead of the upcoming Rás na mBan the 5 stage 4 day international women's cycling race held in Clare. Eve will be hoping to be selected as part of a string Leinster team for the event.
On the same day Eve's brother Bryan took 7th in the men's race, having placed 2nd the day before, having been narrowly piped for the win by Tim O`Regan. Bryan's next outing will be the international Suir Vally 3 Day held over the August Bank Holiday weekend in Carrick-on-Suir.
