Cycling Ireland, the sports governing body, hosted a ladies training camp on Saturday last in Mullingar. The camp featured talks and demonstrations from a number of the country's top coaches and also included a long training ride. The day attracted over 40 riders and such is the strength of Dundalk's Cuchulainn CC that the club had the biggest participation of any one club with 10 Dundalk ladies present on the day. The riders learned many valuable lessons on the day, from simple group riding skills through to tips for planning training for the season and peaking for the big races. Ladies cycling in Ireland continues to go from strength to strength, with a nation wide road racing series, a Tuesday night league hosted in South Dublin and finishing off with the International Rás na mBan, a 3 day stage race held in early September in Kerry. Last season saw Dundalk riders compete in a number of rounds of the Women's National league and those interested in racing this year should contact women's reps within Cuchulainn CC, Michelle Dolan and Kathleen Byrne. On the open racing front action moved this weekend to the Co. Meath village of Bohermeen. A full days activities saw separate races for the A1 & 2, 3 and 4 categories, as well as underage racing. The club had the largest contingent take place in the A4 race, with 5 club men sign on. Gary Shiels and David McKewon, both known better for their mountain bike exploits, finished just outside the prizes. In the A3 Karl Dolan featured in a number of unsuccessful breaks and was well placed approaching the finish line sprint. Unfortunately the rider in front of Karl came off, knocking him out of contention for the win, which went to John Priest of Lucan Road Club. In the main race, Michael Barry, fresh from a Spanish training camp, and Colm Quinn continued their preparation for the An Post Rás, with good showings. Meanwhile in the under 16 event Aimhirghin & Cuirithir O’Brannagain had their first taste of racing, an experience which is sure to stand to them in the future.

This Saturday action moves to Co. Dublin, Batterstown for the annual St. Patricks Day event.
