Colm Quinn 5th Overall in Portaferry 3 Day
The latest round of the FPM Accountants Summer Cycling League was a 10mile Time Trial, starting at Felda Gym & out to Castlebellingham & back. A windy night meant times would not be the quickest on record, but that didn't stop Colm Quinn from posting the fastest time on the night of 21:55. Less than 9seconds later Gerry McCabe was in 2nd position, with Newry Wheeler's rider Kevin Lynch in 3rd at a time of 22:39. Myles McCorry was the only other rider to break 23mins with a time of 22.42. In total over 30 riders completed the course & a sign of improving performances within the club was that every single rider broke 30mins, meaning even the "slowest" rider averaged over 20mphs for the course.
At this stage the league is starting to get to the business end of the season with only 6 rounds remaining. The league will finish up in September with the mountain time trials up The Long Woman's Grave & Jenkinstown over respective Thursday nights. The time trial specialists will get another chance to test their legs with the final 10mile TT on August 18th.
Meanwhile in the Ladies & Beginners league, the beginners were dominant over the ladies this week with an all male podium, Mickey Stokes taking the win ahead of Brendan Neary & Paul Newman. Sarah Fagan was the first lady home in 4th. Chris Rodgers 6th place sees him continue to top the leader board in this competition.
In the French Alps the club's mountain bikers finished up their 8 day odyssey, very tired but ultimately successful having finished their epic journey. All 4 Dundalk men did themselves & the club proud showing great endurance & perseverance over the 8 days.
On the road racing scene Cuchulainn had Myles McCorry & Colm Quinn compete in the Portaferry 3 Day. On stage 1 both riders finished in the main bunch. Onto stage Quinn featured in the winning break & came home in 6th position & was 5th that evening in the time trial. Starting the 4th & final stage Quinn was less than 60secs off the yellow jersey. Some good early riding by team mate McCorry allowed Quinn to get into the winning break, from which he attacked & opened up a sizable gap. At one stage Quinn was actually race leader on the road, but began to tire towards the end, eventually been caught with a few miles to go. When the final time sheets were done up Quinn was a fine 5th overall with McCorry also in the top 25 places.
The beginners cycle continues to leave from Felda Gym on Tuesday night leaving at 6:30pm. This group caters purely for beginner cyclists & is led by experienced cyclists who will show the newcomers the tricks of the trade.
