Louth Road Race Championships

On Thursday last (June 15th), Cuchulainn Cycling Club hosted the Louth Road Race Championships. The race was run off in sweltering heat in and around the Ravensdale area and a good field saw riders from all the main clubs in the county line up.

In the women's race underage rider Rhiannon Dolan of Cuchulainn Cycling Club continued her good form for the season taking a dominating solo win. Rhiannon has notched up a number of top results so far this season racing in the green of Cuchuliann and blue of Leinster. Most recently she won the inaugural Debbie Barklay (nee Kane) Memorial road race held in Belfast on June 10th.

In the men's race held over 57km, the action was thick and fast from the start with Aian Cunningham and Eve McCrystal both riding very strongly. By the mid way point a selection of the 8 strongest riders in the race had been made. On the final time up the longest climb on the course, neutralised Louth man Neill Delahaye of Bellurgan Wheelers put in a big attack and quickly established a gap. Liam Dolan, underage rider Callum McCaffrey (both of Cuchulainn CC) and Conor Mckeown (Unattached), managed to bridge across to him, with the rest in hot pursuit behind. These 4 worked well together to stay away and in the sprint for the finish Delahaye went early and just managed to hold off McKeown to take the gold. Dolan beat out McCaffrey to round out the podium.

A big thanks is extended to all the marshalls and the Red Cross who provided ambulance support on the night. The next racing event of the club is the Bike Station Summer Cycling League. Starting Thursday June 22nd the league will run over 6 rounds.
