There has been a good run of results recently for the town's
cycling club, Cuchulainn. Jimmy Flynn claimed another National Medal at the Masters
Cycling Championships in Wexford recently. Jimmy posted the 3rd fastest time in the 24km Time Trial for Masters 60+. The next day in the road race, again in the Masters 60+, Jimmy & club president Sé Weston were taking part. Sé had a great race & at one staged looked a likely winner with a 40km solo break, however in the final few kms he was heart breakingly hauled back with the line almost insight.
On the off road seen, Meave Baxter won the overall title in Female Category at the Vitus Fast Tracks Enduro Series. Held over 4 rounds Meave finally clinched the title in the final round in Castlewellan, where she also had another win.
Also on the off road scene, September has seen the start of the Cyclo Cross Season, which has proved a happy hunting ground for the club's underage riders. Most recently the racing was held in Lady Dixon park in Belfast. In the under 12 girl's race Ffionn Dolan was 2nd with Grace O`Rourke close behind in 7th. The under 12 boys had Shane Meegan in 10th & clubmate Ryan Doogan in 13th. Under 14 girls, Rhiannon Dolan was 4th with Aron Doogan 9th in the boys. Sean Daly had a top 25 in the senior A race, while PJ Hynes battled through a number of mechanicals to take 13th in the B race.
The leisure season came to a close at the recent Tony Golden memorial cycle, an excellent event which covered 115km of the country. The club had close on 30 riders taking part in the cycle, which was run off in glorious sunshine.
