The 2013 FPM Accountants Summer Cycling League continued in it's new format with the league being split in 2 & the winner being decided come September by whom has the most points, irrespective of which league they rode in. In the A league the winner emerged from Group 3 when Aimhirghin O`Brannagain won a sprint from a large group that approached the finish at the Ballymac. The 3 groups had come together not long after the half way mark of the 3 lap, 50km race. The lap went up through the forest of Ravensdale which made for tough racing. Aimhirghin would be one of the club's strong junior riders & will be sure to step up to the B league next season. Second in the sprint was Kenneth Farrelly, ahead of Enda McKeown whom, had gone off in group 3. Aidan Leonard of Carrickmacross and Ronan Jennings of Newery rounded out the top 5. Annette Dawe was first lady home ahead of Lisa neary & Debbie Lundy.
Meanwhile in the B League Bryan McCrystal continued his winning streak with yet another commanding performance. McCrystal is building his form ahead of this month's An Post Rás, where over 8 days he will be racing on the Louth team against many of Europe's top cycling teams. McCrystal broke away from his his fellow group 6 companions & started eating up the ground on those in front of him. As the line approached the 2 front groups had merged & it became a matter of whether McCrystal would have enough road left to take the win. As the others started to wind up for the sprint McCrystal put in one huge last effort & literally passed them with meters to spare to take the win. Second place went to Kevin Treanor, ahead of Daren McCullough of Newery. Gary Shiels & another Newry ride,r Robin Cumming were in 4th & 5th respectively.
In action over the Bank Holiday Weekend will be Eve McCrystal, when she travels to Bedford to take part in an international 3 day race as part of the Leinster team. The race packs 5 stages into only 3 days & it will be in the individual time trial where Eve would be expected to shine.
