The dust has settled on another season of summer league racing, supported by FPM Accountants, and Thursday night saw a number of champions crowned. The league finished up with the Hill Climb Competition, up Jenkinstown Hill, which served also as the Leinster and Louth Hill Climb Championships. With these 2 titles and the league titles up for grabs it was all to play for and over 40 riders stormed up the hill.
Fastest on the night was Dundrum's Brian Ahern whom rides for Orwell Wheelers, in a time of 4:49. He beat out Chris Reilly of Bohermeen, with favourite Ray O`Shaughnessy taking 3rd. While Ray may have been disappointed to not top the podium he can take solace from the fact that this result saw him not only regain his Louth title but also win the league outright. Kenny Sullivan failed to score any points in the event and lost out atop the leader board by the slim margin of only 2 points to Ray. Kevin Trainer completed the League's Podium, with 4th place going to Jim Loughran and 5th Val Gargan.
Within the league despite Chris Reilly's 2nd place on the night he didn't score enough points to overhaul Stamullen's Gary Gorman for the visitor's prize. Eve McCrystal was another winner in the league with only 1 point to spare over Celine McPhilips.with Annette Dawe in 3rd place.
On the Hill Climb the women's winner was also from Orwell Wheelers with one of Ireland's top riders Rachael Glendon posting a time of 6:14, exactly 14seconds faster than Cuchulainn's Annette Dawe. While Glendon took the Leinster Championship, Dawe takes over the Louth Jersy, her sister having won it the year before. In 3rd position in the Hill Climb was Adamstown Cycling Club's Roisin Kennedy. Both Glendon and Kennedy were using the hill climb as training for the upcoming Rás na Mban, the international ladies cycling event held in Kerry every September. Phil O`Flaherty of Sword's was the veteran's winner, ahead of Gary Gorman and Cuchulainn's Ray Fedigan. Aaron McCann, more knowing for his exploits on the mountain bike was the outright winner of the Junior category, grabbing himself a Leinster and Louth title in the process.
So ends another year of summer league racing and congratulations to all the winners. Ray O`Shaughnessey had some big wins in the tougher rounds which ultimately saw him prevail over the consistency of Kenny Sullivan. Kenny a newcomer to the sport is bound to draw motivation from his outstanding result and come back stronger next season.
Meanwhile on the road race seen, Jimmy Flynn and Ray Fedigan both competed in the most recent round of the IVCA League. Jimmy was determined to have a good showing in his first season with the vets and jumped from the bunch to join a lone rider in a breakaway on the last lap of the 80km event held on the familiar Duleek circuit. Though chased by another 2 man group they stayed away with Jimmy loosing out by half a wheel to finish 2nd. Ray stayed with the main field and took 2nd in the bunch sprint finishing 6th overall.
