Blue skies & relatively high temperates greeted the riders for the final round of the Ulster Cyclocross Series, promoted by Newry Wheelers in Kilbroney Park on Sunday. The course was a challenging mix of tarmac, grass & forest trail, which was made considerably tougher by the recent rain. The course wound it's way around many trees & low hanging branches that made many a rider glad of their helmet. In addition the mud, which got worse as the race went on, so to it that many a rider came unstuck.
First up for the club was Sé McEvoy competing in the underage mountain bike race where he had an excellent outing. In the main race Cuchullainn had seven riders on the start line, making it easily the most well represented club in the race. From the gun Johnny McCabe was in the thick of the action and once again won the supervet race, meaning that he completed a clean sweep in the 5 race series, taking the supervet prize in all 5 events. Brother Declan McCabe was also riding well but was forced out of contention with a puncture. A technical problem was also to rule out Gary Shiels, a broken chain meant that his day ended early. David McKeown and Seamus McEvoy both had good races & finished well up the field. Brothers Karl & Liam Dolan were locked in their own personnel battle throughout the race with Karl eventually taking the race within the race.
Cyclocross racing will soon be returning to Dundalk, when Bellurgan Park hosts an event on December 17th. Race director Myles McCorry is sure to put together an exciting course giving his vast experience in this racing discipline. Also mandatory for riders on the day is a moustache. Rest assured for those unwilling or unable to grow one, a substitute will be provided.
In the meantime the club's riders will be leaving the lycra at home for 1 night, with the annual prize giving & Christmas night being held on December 4th at Oriel Park.
