2013 FPM Accountants Summer League Starts
While the weather may say otherwise it is now the summer and with that comenced the 2013 FPM Accountants Summer Cycling League. Such has been the growth of the league over the last number of year's that the competition is now run in a new format with 2 separate races, a step that was necessary with 135 participants signed up for the 2013 race. Traditionally the league had 6 groups all racing together in a handicapped system. Now the league seea as A league for beginners, groups 1 - 3 and a B league for the remaining 3 groups.
A new format made no diference to the human motorbike that is Bryan McCrystal when he took an impressive solo victory in the B league. Bryan, starting in group 6, didn't so much as attack but set such a blistering pace that no one could keep up with him. He quickly rode up to the 5th group, where Newry rider Dessy Woods managed to hitch onto him for a few miles before he continued on. Bryan continued to take the win with Woods in second. Behind the 3 groups came together and Stamullen rider Gary Gorman won the sprint for 3rd ahead of Cuchulainn's Karl Dolan. In this race Eve McCrystal showed why she will be repesenting Leinster in the Bradford 2 Day in May, by being one of the strongest riders in the race.
In the A League Eamonn McKeown kicked off his campaign with a victory ahead of Newry Wheeler's rider Donal Cormican in 2nd & Shane Lennon in 3rd. Eamonn had started the day in the 3rd group & bridged the gap up to the leaders, while Donal was a few seconds ahead of the bunch sprinting for 3rd. Lisa Neary was first lady home.
Meanwhile on the open racing front Cuchulainn continued with their impressive run of results in the IVCA league. Such is their success that any time a green jersey moved every other rider in the race was in close attendance. Martin Grey continually tried to breakaway but was given no lee way. Finally as the race came down to a mass sprint finish Ray Fedigan showed a good turn of speed to take second position.
Also in road racing action Bryan McCrystal continued his rich vein of form when taking second position in the Coombes Conor Memorial in Drogheda on Sunday. In the support race Richard Mruphy was 5th, which secured him enough points in the Cycling Ireland ranking system to move up into the A3 category.
